The invention of the G-SHOCK

It began in 1976

This year, the young Kikuo Ibe joined Casio's design department, little knowing that he would revolutionize the watch industry. The catalyst for the idea of a shock-resistant timepiece was the loss of a watch he had received as a gift from his father. The moment the watch fell to the floor and shattered sparked his vision of creating a watch that could withstand the most extreme conditions.

Despite initial resistance within the company, he began development in 1981. Numerous tests and failed attempts characterized the process – until finally the crucial idea came to him: Inspired by a child playing and bouncing a rubber ball on the floor, he realized that the clockwork mechanism had to be mounted in a suspended structure to absorb vibrations.

In 1983, the first G-SHOCK, the "DW-5000C," was launched – a watch that fundamentally changed the watch industry. Initially met with skepticism, it took several years for the G-SHOCK brand to achieve cult status. Construction workers, extreme sports enthusiasts, and military personnel, in particular, quickly recognized the invaluable worth of this robust timepiece. Today, G-SHOCK is a global symbol of resilience and innovation.

To this day, Kikuo Ibe remains tireless. He not only serves as a technical consultant but also as a charismatic brand ambassador. He is particularly dedicated to the development of luxury models such as the "MR-G" series with its metal case or the exclusive gold G-SHOCK. However, his greatest dream remains unfulfilled: to create a G-SHOCK that can withstand even the extreme conditions of space. His motto remains: "Never give up!" – a philosophy that has shaped not only his career but also the entire G-SHOCK brand.

G-SHOCK today: Steel-hard innovation and new materials

Casio's latest generation of G-SHOCK watches focuses on innovative materials and high-quality craftsmanship. While many brands concentrate on mechanical watches, Casio remains true to its digital roots, combining tradition with modern technology.

At INHORGENTA 2025, Casio will present a variety of new models, including the "DW-5000R" as a tribute to the first G-SHOCK from 1983. Stainless steel versions and the new Tough Silicone band, which offers greater comfort and abrasion resistance, will also be a particular focus. These additions allow for a targeted "trading-up": watches with higher-quality materials for discerning customers.

The target audience for these higher-end models is divided into two groups: On the one hand, long-time fans who grew up with the first G-SHOCKs and are now looking for more refined versions; on the other hand, lovers of steel watches who appreciate a robust alternative with a unique design. Despite this premium expansion, Casio remains true to its philosophy and continues to offer models for every budget.

With this approach, Casio proves that innovation doesn't always have to be mechanical. The G-SHOCK brand remains a symbol of resilience and modern design, constantly evolving without forgetting its roots.
