VALORIMA – Tips for security in the store

Greater protection during peak sales seasons begins with prevention.

For jewelers, watchmakers, and goldsmiths, periods of high customer traffic are among the most economically important times of the year. Well-frequented stores, increased demand, and particularly elaborate displays of merchandise characterize these periods. At the same time, with increased activity in city centers and extended opening hours, the risk of burglaries and robberies also rises. Attractively designed displays and valuable goods not only attract potential buyers but can also draw the attention of potential perpetrators.

Organization, technology, training: Three pillars of modern store security

VALORIMA, the jewelry insurance arm of Mannheimer, therefore recommends regularly reviewing security concepts and adapting them to current conditions. Careful preparation can significantly reduce the risk of damage and helps to react calmly and effectively in an emergency. This includes, among other things, training for employees, clearly defined procedures for opening and closing the store, and controlled access during opening hours. A locked entrance door with visual inspection, which is only opened after verification, noticeably increases security and creates a calmer working environment.

Organizational measures also play a key role in prevention. High-priced jewelry should only be displayed in limited quantities, and window displays should ideally be arranged outside of business hours. Up-to-date alarm and emergency plans, as well as coordinated procedures with the emergency call and service center, are equally important. The use of modern panic alarms, video surveillance, and time-delay systems effectively complements these measures and contributes to the long-term protection of employees and assets.

Burglar-resistant glazing: Security in detail

Besides organizational and technical measures, glazing plays a central role in the protection of business premises. Especially during the darker months, attempted break-ins increase, with shop windows and display cases often used as entry points. Here, the choice of the right glass can determine the outcome of a break-in.

In the VALORIMA hammer test, Marc Will, Underwriting VALORIMA, and Annette Niessen, Underwriting ARTIMA, demonstrate how differently two P6B-certified glass types behave in an emergency: laminated safety glass with a film core and laminated safety glass with a polycarbonate core. Both variants offer high resistance but differ in their properties and ideal applications. Depending on the store's location, presentation concept, and security level, the appropriate glass can be selected – individually tailored to the specific requirements.

Our underwriters will gladly support you with expert knowledge and personalized advice. Because security isn't a matter of chance, but the result of meticulous planning, high-quality technology, and regularly monitored measures. See for yourself how the two glasses perform in the hammer test:
